Day 1 – Arrival & settle in

You’ll be picked up from the airport or agreed location and brought north to your first night’s accommodation in the heart of the region. Take time to unwind, meet your hosts, and enjoy a hearty, home-cooked evening meal to start your adventure right.

Day 2 – Tutukaka Coast to Russell

We’ll start our engines and cruise through town toward the iconic Tutukaka Coast. Enjoy a scenic coffee stop, followed by a relaxed lunch overlooking the harbour. After lunch, we’ll wind our way inland via rural roads before reconnecting with State Highway 1 and heading north along one of Northland’s most stunning coastal stretches. Arrive in Russell for your first overnight stay, either at a historic waterside hotel or a secluded bushland Airbnb with spa facilities. It’s your choice.

Day 3 – Bay of Islands to Whangaroa

Spend the morning at your own pace. Explore the marine reserve on a cruise to the Hole in the Rock, relax on secluded beaches, or just soak up the views. After a ferry ride to Paihia and lunch in town, we ride the scenic inland road to Kerikeri and visit the historic Stone Store, sample local chocolate, or enjoy a drink at the old pub. Then we head north via the stunning Matai Bay route to Whangaroa. Tonight’s stay offers more options: a harbourside lodge or a peaceful B&B with elevated views.

Day 4 – Cape Reinga, Ninety Mile Beach & Ahipara

We’ll start the day with coffee in Mangonui before heading north to Cape Reinga or west to Ahipara, depending on tide conditions. Whether coming or going, you’ll experience the legendary Ninety Mile Beach where we’ll set up a good old Kiwi BBQ in the middle of nowhere. Swim, surf cast, crack a beer and enjoy the freedom. Finish the day with a coastal cruise to Opononi for the night, staying at the iconic Sands Hotel.

Day 5 – Forests, Lakes & the West Coast home stretch

We begin with a visit to the mighty Waipoua Forest to see the giant kauri trees, then cruise past stunning dune lakes to Baylys Beach for a laid-back lunch at a funky local pub. From there, wind through Dargaville and down the coast to Mangawhai, with stops at Waipu and Langs Beach. You’ll spend your final night at a comfortable local B&B, where a hosted dinner wraps up the journey. The next morning, we’ll see you off to the airport, or back on the road.
